Breath Tests
SIBO Breath Test (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)
The SIBO breath test is a non-invasive diagnostic test used to detect abnormal bacterial growth in the small intestine. After drinking a sugar solution (usually lactulose or glucose), breath samples are collected over time to measure hydrogen and methane gases. Elevated levels of these gases indicate bacterial fermentation occurring in the small intestine, which may explain symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, excessive gas, and unexplained nutritional deficiencies.
Sugar Intolerance Breath Tests (Lactose, Fructose, Sorbitol)
Sugar intolerance breath tests evaluate the body’s ability to properly digest and absorb specific carbohydrates. Following ingestion of a test sugar, breath samples are analyzed for hydrogen and methane production. Increased gas levels suggest malabsorption, meaning the sugar reaches the colon undigested and is fermented by bacteria. These tests help diagnose lactose intolerance, fructose malabsorption, and other carbohydrate sensitivities that commonly cause bloating, cramps, diarrhea, and discomfort after eating.
Why These Tests Matter
Breath tests are safe, accurate, and non-invasive tools that help identify the underlying cause of chronic gastrointestinal symptoms. Proper diagnosis allows for personalized treatment plans, including dietary adjustments and targeted medical therapy, leading to improved symptom control and quality of life.
